SOME GOOD NEWS
After L.A. fires, a local run club helps pick up the pieces (ESPN) Love this. "Before the fire, running had become a way for Walton to recalibrate and to stay in shape for his other athletic pursuits. What started as a way to keep his body tuned gradually became something more. The club gave him community. And in the disoriented months since the fire, it gave him something close to salvation."
Colorado kayakers paddle to rescue a dog that tumbled over 60-foot waterfall in Mexico (Colorado Sun) #Heroes "The only way the dog entered the gorge was over that 60-foot Tomata 1 drop. So she was rattled. Palmer spent about 30 minutes talking sweetly to the trembling, waterlogged pup. She eventually approached him. He held her for another 30 minutes."

VIDEO: Portrait of a fan: Edmonton man paints hundreds of faces at every Oilers game (CBC) EDMONTON STORY #GoOilersGo "More often than not, lifelong Edmonton Oilers fan Jacob Golka can be seen on game nights with his back to the screen and hands hard at work. Wielding a paint palette and dipping and swapping brushes in a flash, Golka usually needs just a few seconds to decorate a fan's face. His speed and accuracy are certainly a result of practice, but are also necessary if he wants to keep up with the steady line that forms around him at the Oilers' watch parties outside Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton."
VIDEO: Calgary’s zoo gets funding to support woodland caribou through lichen harvesting (CTV) CALGARY STORY Congrats. "The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has announced a $285,000 investment from TC Energy to help boost the organization’s lichen harvesting program, which helps feed their woodland caribou. Lichen is a unique plant that’s a mix of fungus and algae. 'In the wild, it can make up as much as 85 per cent of a woodland caribou’s winter diet,' explained Larisa Jancewicz, supervisor of animal nutrition. At the zoo, it’s used as a treat during training and for enrichment exercises when it’s spread throughout the enclosure for them to forage."

VIDEO: I was a lifelong thrifter, committed to buying second-hand. Then I became addicted (CBC) CANADIAN STORY My daughter is a master thrifter. And she has terrific style. "When I was younger, buying second-hand was not only affordable, but one-of-a-kind fashion was a way I expressed my creativity. Buying used offered uniqueness; no one else in theatre class would be wearing the same 1960s paisley dress with the sleeves cut off and a Dead Kennedys band logo glue-gunned onto the back."

The specimen was originally discovered in Mongolia's Gobi Desert over 50 years ago in the 1970s, but its significance wasn't recognized until Darla Zelenitsky, an associate professor in the university's faculty of science, sent graduate student Jared Voris to Mongolia on a research trip."
Newark’s Air Traffic Control Staffing Crisis Is Dire. It’s Also Not Unique. (New York Times) Eek! "Ninety-nine percent of the air traffic control facilities in the United States are operating below recommended staffing levels, a New York Times analysis has found. The ongoing crisis at Newark Liberty International Airport has put a spotlight on the prolonged nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers. As of May 7, only two of 313 facilities — one in Akron, Ohio, and another in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — met staffing targets set by the Federal Aviation Administration and the union representing controllers, according to union data obtained by The Times."
